Re-Thinking Possible
Seeing Possibilities in the Abyss
Having just watched the Chiefs defeat the Eagles in Super Bowl 57, I got to thinking about the Patriots' stunning victory in Super Bowl 51. It may have looked like a classic case of grit and greatness in the face of what appeared to be a losing cause. Down 25 points late in the third quarter, somehow the Patriots turned disaster into determination. The greatness of Tom Brady (will he retire?) and coach Bill Belichick notwithstanding, the Patriots’ victory over the Atlanta Falcons illustrates the power of seeing possibilities while looking down into the seeming abyss with no way out.
I remember that, just before the game, National Public Radio aired an interview with Caylin Moore. Despite growing up poor in a crime –ridden section of Los Angeles and with his father in jail for murder, Moore went from football star to campus custodian to Rhodes Scholar. Whether you're Tom Brady, Caylin Moore, or (hopefully not) a donkey stuck in a well, each of us will face business and personal issues that will test our resolve. Those most likely to succeed are those who reframe challenges and rethink what's possible.
